Landmarks, Lakes, Rivers

  • Fort Severn is an isolated community of ~400 located on the Severn river and it is the northernmost community in Ontario.

  • Peawanuck is an isolated community of ~230 located on the junction of the Winisk and Shamattawa rivers.

  • Winisk is a ghost town of a Cree community that was destroyed in the 1986 Winisk flood.

  • Polar Bear Provincial park is the largest provincial park in Ontario and is located on the Hudson’s Bay shore. The park is accessible by air only and its primary purpose is the preservation of habitat for wildlife, specifically polar bears.

  • Severn River is 982 km long and is one of the longest rivers in Ontario. 

  • Winisk River is 475 km long and drains into Hundson Bay.

The following fish are not present in Zone 1 (seasons are closed): Atlantic Salmon, Brown Trout, Channel Catfish, Crappie, Largemouth, Smallmouth Bass, Muskellunge, Rainbow Trout, Splake, sunfish and Pacific Salmon.

  • Brook Trout: Jan 1 to Sep 30

  • Lake Sturgeon: Jan 1 to Apr 30 and Jul 1 to Dec 31

  • Whitefish: open all year

  • Yellow Perch: open all year
