Landmarks, Lakes, Rivers

  • Toronto: Indigenous peoples have traveled through and inhabited the Toronto area, located on a broad sloping plateau interspersed with rivers, deep ravines, and urban forest, for more than 10,000 years. The site of Toronto lay at the entrance to one of the oldest routes to the northwest, a route known and used by the Huron, Iroquois, and Ojibwe.

  • Lake Simcoe contains a large island, Georgina, which along with Snake Island and Fox Island forms the reserve of the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation. The Lake is most well known for its abundance of Jumbo Perch.

  • Lake Couchiching is connected to Lake Simcoe through the narrows in the town of Orillia.  "Couch" is an amazing fishery for Yellow Perch, Northern Pike, Smallmouth Bass, Largemouth Bass and Whitefish.

  • The Grand River is the largest river that is entirely within southern Ontario's boundaries. The river owes its size to the unusual fact that its source is relatively close to the Georgian Bay of Lake Huron, yet it flows southwards to Lake Erie. Thought of as a dirty system it is anything but, holding a massive diversification of fish species and wildlife, including massive Smallmouth Bass and Brown Trout. Bald Eagles nest along the river.

  • Thames River runs through many cities and towns of southwest Ontario including Woodstock, London and Chatham.

  • Belwood Lake is a man made reservoir that starts the Grand River near the town of Fergus. The lake is a popular fishing spot in both summer and winter with the most popular species being Smallmouth Bass, Largemouth Bass, Walleye and Northern Pike.
