Landmarks, Lakes, Rivers
Moosonee is a town in NorthEastern Ontario, Canada, on the Moose River approximately 19 km (12 mi) south of James Bay. It is considered to be "the Gateway to the Arctic" and has Ontario's only saltwater port. Moosonee is connected by rail with regular service from Cochrane, Ontario.
In 1962, Moosonee became the site of R.C.A.F station Moosonee that was part of N.O.R.A.D's Pinetree line chain of radar stations. It closed in 1975 and some of its buildings were used by the Town after the closure.
As with the rest of Hudson Bay, the waters of James Bay routinely freeze over in winter. It is the last part of Hudson Bay to freeze over in winter, and the first to thaw in summer. Numerous waterways of the James Bay watershed have been modified with dams or diversion for several major Hydroelectric projects.
The area has very limited fishing pressure with most of the area being fly-in only.
