Landmarks, Lakes, Rivers

  • Quetico Provincial Park is a large Wilderness park in OFMZ 5, known for its excellent Canoeing and Fishing. The 4,760 km2 (1,180,000-acre) park shares its southern border with Minnesota’s boundary waters Canoe area Wilderness, which is part of the larger Superior National Forest.

  • Lake of the Woods is the sixth largest freshwater lake located (at least partially) in the United States, after the five Great Lakes, and the 36th largest Lake in the World by area. It separates a small land area of Minnesota from the rest of the United States. It is considered a Muskellunge factory and has had many massive fish pulled from her waters annually.

  • Kenora - The traditional Ojibwe name of Kenora is Wazhashk-Ongamiing meaning place of the muskrat portage, corresponding to the older English name of the settlement, Rat Portage. The nearby First Nation band of the Anishinabe of Wauzhushk Onigum retains this name as well. The name "Kenora" was coined by combining the first two letters of Keewatin, Norman and Rat Portage. Norman was a small community halfway between the village of Keewatin and Rat Portage.
