Landmarks, Lakes, Rivers

  • Lake Nipigon is part of the Great Lakes drainage basin. It is the largest lake entirely within the boundaries of the Canadian province of Ontario.The Township of Nipigon was incorporated in 1908. The Municipality of Greenstone was incorporated in 2001 and includes Orient Bay, MacDiarmid, Beardmore, Nakina, Longlac, Caramat, Jellicoe and Geraldton.

  • Lac des Mille Lacs is in the western part of Thunder Bay District.  It is in the Nelsen River drainage basin and is the source of the Seine river. The lake lies between Ontario Hwy 17 on the north and Ontario Hwy 11 on the south about 100 kilometers (62 mi) west of the city of Thunder Bay. The most popular species caught here are Burbot, Walleye, and Northern Pike with massive Muskellunge pulled annually by anglers.

  • Thunder Bay - Various Anishinaabe peoples such as the Ojibwa are indigenous to the Thunder Bay Area. European settlement at Thunder Bay began with two French fur trading posts (in 1683 and 1717) which were subsequently abandoned. It is the most populous municipality in Northwestern Ontario.
